Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta è nata il 28 marzo 1986 al Lenox Hill Hospital, nell'Upper East Side di New York.^[16] Il padre, Joseph Germanotta, è un imprenditore statunitense di origini siciliane (come confermato dalla stessa cantautrice durante una tappa del The Born This Way Ball Tour, tenutasi a Milano), con radici familiari nel comune di Naso in provincia di Messina Il trisavolo di Lady Gaga è partito nel 1908 da Palermo per raggiungere New York in nave", Il trisavolo della cantante pop si chiamava Antonino Germanotta e faceva il calzolaio di Naso. , mentre la madre, Cynthia Bissett, è una casalinga statunitense di origini franco-canadesi. Lady Gaga ha anche una sorella minore di nome Natali.^[18] Cresciuta nell'Upper West Side di Manhattan, ha frequentato la scuola cattolica per sole ragazze Convent of the Sacred Heart School^[19] e si è descritta come una studentessa «molto dedita, molto studiosa, molto disciplinata» ma «un po' insicura».^[20][21] Durante gli anni degli studi ha anche subìto diversi atti di bullismo.^[22]

Dopo il liceo, incoraggiata dalla madre, Lady Gaga è riuscita ad entrare alla Tisch School of the Arts di New York, abbandonandola poco dopo per dedicarsi completamente alla sua carriera musicale.^[28] Lasciata quindi la casa dei suoi genitori, ha iniziato a esibirsi nei club del Lower East Side, dove suonava con gruppi musicali chiamati Mackin Pulsifer e Stefani Germanotta Band. Intenta a trovare un proprio stile musicale, ha deciso di fare qualcosa di nuovo e provocatorio sulla scena underground e rock and roll newyorkese, ovvero la musica pop.^[29] Il padre ha raccontato di essere rimasto sconvolto quando ha scoperto che la figlia si era messa in mostra in un bar burlesque, esibendosi al fianco di drag queen e spogliarellisti,^[30] tanto da darle un ultimatum: le avrebbe pagato l'affitto dell'appartamento in Stanton Street solo per qualche mese, dopodiché avrebbe dovuto provvedere da sola o, in caso contrario, sarebbe tornata a studiare all'università.

"The pop singer was called Antonino Germanotta and was the Naso shoemaker.  While her mother, Cynthia Bissett, is a US homemaker of Canadian-French origins. Lady Gaga also has a little sister called Natali. [18] He grew up in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, attended the Catholic School for Girls by the Convent of the Sacred Heart School [19] and described himself as a "very devoted, very scholarly, disciplined" student but "a little insecure" .  During the years of studies he also suffered various acts of bullying. 

Lady Gaga's passion for musicals during high school has led him to play protagonists of several productions, such as Adelaide in Guys and Dolls and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. At fifteen she has appeared briefly in the episode Small bosses are growing up in the Soprano TV series, [24] while in 2005, at the age of 19, she appears in the MTV Boiling Points television program. In 2014 she confessed that at this same age she was raped by a bigger man than her for about 20 years and had not talked to anyone about her shame. Initially he tried to overcome the trauma by drinking, but later went on therapy to overcome the shock ultimately. [25] [26] He then stated that because of this, he began to suffer from PTSD. [27]

After her high school, encouraged by her mother, Lady Gaga managed to enter the Tisch School of the Arts in New York, abandoning her shortly afterwards to completely devote herself to her musical career. [28] He then left his parents' home, started playing at the Lower East Side clubs, where he played with music groups called Mackin Pulsifer and Stefani Germanotta Band. Intending to find her own musical style, she decided to do something new and provocative on the underground scene and New York rock and roll, or pop music. [29] The father said he was upset when he found out that his daughter had been exposed in a burlesque bar, performing alongside drag queen and stripper, 30 so much to give her an ultimatum: she would have paid her the rent of the ' Apartment in Stanton Street for only a few months, then he should have been alone or, if he did, would return to study at the university.
